Renting in Qatar, step by step
From the first search to getting your keys: what to check, what to pay and what to sign.
1. Set your budget
Decide your monthly ceiling first, including bills. Use the Budget planner to see which areas and sizes fit, and ask early whether the rent includes electricity, water, cooling and internet: "bills included" listings can save a lot in summer.
2. Search and shortlist
Compare the same home across sites on QatarScanner: the same apartment is often listed by several brokers at different prices. Save favourites, then compare them side by side.
3. View the property
Visit at the time of day you'd normally be home. Take the Viewing checklist: air conditioning, water pressure, parking, noise, mobile signal, and what furniture stays.
4. Agree the terms
Agree in writing: monthly rent, payment method (often post-dated cheques), deposit, broker commission, who pays which bills, maintenance, and any free month or grace period.
- Ask whether the broker is licensed and how much commission is charged before you commit.
- Get every promise into the contract, not just a message.
5. Sign and register the lease
Leases are registered with the authorities. Since 3 September 2026 the registration fee is a flat QAR 250 (Law No. 8 of 2026). A registered lease is needed for many next steps, such as utility connections. See the law page on renting for details.
6. Move in
Photograph every room on day one, read the meters, and keep copies of all receipts and cheques. Use the Move-in checklist so nothing is missed.
